CHNS analysis in liquid fuels with thevario EL cube.

The CHNS content of liquid fuels is usually determined as an indication for its quality and fuel value. Liquid fuel samples filled in capsules can be analyzed with the vario EL cube in its standard set-up.

The samples are weighed into tin capsules which are flushed with O2 while
sealing the capsules, in order to avoid ambient air inclusions. The daily factor has been determined using stearic acid and sulfanilic acid.

Rapid Generation of High- Producing Clonal Cell Lines

In this article the Janssen R&D cell-line development (CLD) group partnered with Sphere Fluidics to evaluate the Cyto-Mine system.

The Janssen R&D cell-line development (CLD) group partnered with Sphere Fluidics to evaluate its Cyto-Mine system: a high-throughput microfluidics instrument developed to address unmet needs in the monoclonality and productivity screening stages of cell-line development processes. The instrument takes a mixed population of cells loaded by a user and encapsulates individual cells into picodroplets.

The machine then analyzes each individual droplet for productivity using a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)–based screen, then images and dispenses the highestproductivity droplets into individual microplate wells. The entire process occurs inside a singleuse cartridge with media and reagents that are completely free of animal-sourced components.

Automating the C100ht Biologics Analyzer Sample Preparation on a Biomek i5 Liquid Handler Platform.


There is an increasing need in the biopharmaceutical industry for large-scale N-glycosylation profiling of therapeutic antibodies in all phases of product development. Investigation for fuel-cell structures with multi-scale X-ray analysis.

It is well known that X-rays have wavelengths comparable with interatomic distances and can be utilized for atomic-scale structural determination. In addition, X-rays can penetrate through opaque objects and show the internal structure without destroying the object. Recently, the resolution of X-ray microscopes has been pushed down to the sub-micrometer level. These devices are also capable of recording computed tomography (CT) data. This is a powerful technique for visualizing the internal structure of various specimens in three dimensions (3D) at the micrometer scale.

27-Marker High-Sensitivity Experiments on a 3-Laser CytoFLEX.

While a small number of channels, and thus detectors, on a flow cytometer can be a limitation, a large number does not necessarily confer a great advantage: the maximum number of biomarkers that can be analyzed by a flow cytometer is not actually limited to the number of channels. The number of markers that can be used with a conventional flow cytometer can be increased by simply stacking biomarkers that do not co-label the populations of interest. In this poster, Beckman Coulter demonstrates how advanced users of flow cytometry may overcome the limitation of channels on a flow cytometer.

Why T-cells are important

  • They recognize host vs. non-host cells to initiate an immune response
  • They're the primary immune system agents that attack diseased cells or infection
  • They're used in several cell-based therapies:

Transplantation of donor T-cells - a bone marrow
transplant, in which a matched donor's cells are used
to replace the patient's cells, is the most widely used
approach—typically for diseases that originate in the
immune system (e.g., leukemia)

Isolation and enrichment of a patient's T-cells – an
approach considered the safest because it enhances
a patient's own immune response to disease

CAR-T therapy – a more recent approach in which
T-cells are removed, genetically engineered to express
a synthetic receptor against specific cancer cells, then
infused back into the patient's bloodstream; this therapy
is effective because many cancer cells "hide" from the
immune system by appearing to be normal cells, thereby
triggering no immune response

Preparation and XRF Analysis of Fly Ash Fused Beads

Application Note from Spex Sample Prep.

Fly ash is a waste product from the combustion of coal and is comprised of the mineral particles that rise with the flue gasses. Recovered fly ash is used as component in certain cement mixes and improves the durability and strength of concrete.

In this study, a sample of fly ash was pulverized and blended, and then fused into two sets of glass beads using a Katanax K1 electric fusion fluxer. Two different lithium borate fusion fluxes from SPEX CertiPrep were used to prepare five beads with each flux. The beads were then analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray flourescence spectroscopy (ED-XRF) and the results were compared both within a set and between the two sets to evaluate consistency of beads produced using the K1 and effect of flux composition on the XRF measurements.

Cellular and biochemical HTRF® assays measured in 1536-well microplates.

Screening for new candidate drugs is a standard procedure in the pharmaceutical industry. However, there are increasing requirements on assays and instrumentation. Especially the number of samples measured per day should be further increased.



This can be realized if high condensed microplates are used, e.g. 1536-well microplates. The instrument of choice must be able to measure such microplates with the fastest possible read time while the assay performance criteria (such as Z´value or S/B) shall be reached. To meet the requirements for ultra high throughput screening BMG LABTECH has developed the microplate reader PHERAstar FSX. The new TRF laser enables fastest read times in 1536-well microplates. Two HTRF assays from Cisbio Bioassays were selected to highlight the enhanced performances achieved with the PHERAstar FSX.

Sulfur analysis in rubber

Application from Elementar - Determining hardness degree of vulcanized rubber.

With elemental analysis, it is possible to determine the exact hardness degree of vulcanized rubber for which the sulfur proportion is essential. Elastomers that contain sulfur cross-linkages by vulcanization ensure high fatigue resistance and a low wear rate for rubber of all types that are exposed to mechanical stress.

To determine the sulfur concentration in rubber, a sample is combusted with the help of catalyst oxygen. The released sulfur dioxide is measured by an integrated thermal conductivity detector and measured as a percentage. With the Elementar analyzer, it is possible to provide high data quality for a variety of substances relevant to the production, or recycling, of rubber products.

Stony-iron meteorite analysis

Analysis of a stony-iron meteorite using a HyPix-3000 multi-dimensional detector.

A stony-iron meteorite is like a single crystal. When using 0- or 1-dimensional detectors, only a few diffraction peaks are observed. In this situation, identification of crystalline phases cannot be conducted. Therefore, a stony-iron meteorite was analyzed using the multi-dimensional detector, HyPix-3000, which has an effective detection area for the identification of crystalline phases.



Measurements and results
A stony-iron meteorite was analyzed using the HyPix-3000. Inside a stony-iron meteorite, there are transparent parts similar to glass and opaque parts similar to metal. The transparent parts were thought to be non-crystalline (amorphous). However, when measurement of the transparent part was actually performed, only one diffraction line was observed. In general, when measurement is done with a 0D or a 1D detector, the range in which diffraction X-rays can be detected from the sample is limited to a certain region. (This region is indicated in yellow in Fig. 1.) In this experiment, the diffraction lines, indicated with red arrows, are within the scanning range, and therefore can be detected. On the other hand, it is possible to acquire information on multiple lattice planes, as shown in Fig. 2, by using the HyPix-3000, which has a wide effective detection area, and by performing measurement while oscillation the sample. When the 2D diffraction image obtained in Fig. 2 was converted to a 2θ-I profile and qualitative analysis of the transparent part was carried out, it was possible to identify forsterite (Mg₂SiO₄) (Fig. 3). Since diffraction spots were observed, it was conjectured that the glass-like transparent part is a single crystal or is comprised of an extremely small number of crystal grains.
